What is the Internet?

A global connection of computers designed to share information… more
Information is shared between computers using a special communication’s standard. Similar to a language, all computers connected to the Internet know how to encode and decode based on protocols. This means we can send different types of information over the Internet, regardless of the language in which it is written, or even the format it is presented (e.g. photographic & sound).
This standard is known as the TCP/IP suite of protocols.
Connecting to the Internet means connecting your computer to another computer, this in turn is connected to other computers…and so on.
The web-like spread of interconnections has lead to the term World Wide Web. To connect into this web network, most businesses use an Internet Service Provider. An ISP does three things; it maintains connections to other ISP’s and computer networks, it enables customers to connect to its network and finally, it manages the cross flow of communication between theses two.
How does the Internet work?

By using set standards to create, package and route information between interconnected computer…more
Using the TCP/IP suit of protocols a computer that wants to communicate with another computer creates and encodes a messages in 5 different ways. Each of these different layers of message encoding is designed to help the information pass between the two computers.
The first layer is the Application (Presentation & Session) Layer. The type of information determines the protocol for encoding at this layer. For example an email message will be encoded using the SMTP protocol or a request for a web page using the HTTP protocol.
Next, the transport layer acts as a manger of the whole transfer, dividing the information into chunks. Primarily it ensures that each separate data unit is sent effectively to the other computer, using one of two protocols TCP or UDP. TCP checks to make sure all the information arrives. UDP is quicker because there is no detection of errors.
The network layer, uses the IP protocol to address and route the packet of
information through the web of the Internet. Routing computers check the destination
IP address and forward the information package appropriately to others, until
it hopefully reaches its destination.
The data link layer makes use of every piece of hardware’s unique MAC
address. This is appended to the datagram of information in addition to an
error checking algorithm, to physically identify the destination piece of
equipment.
Finally the Physical layer enables the information to be converted into a signal for transmission, in most cases this is as pulses of electricity. The information is decoded up to the relevant level, at each stop it makes along its journey. When it reaches the destination computer the whole message is decoded.
